Homemade for the holidays
Festive decorations to make with kids
When the coats and mittens come out, so do the holiday decorations! But this year, instead of pulling the same lights, candles and trinkets out of the storage bins, recruit your sons, daughters, nieces, nephews and neighbor kids to help you create some great homemade decorations. Here are a few great ways to keep your kids occupied indoors and out while getting some decorating help.
• Encourage children to make their own wrapping paper. Roll out a long piece of construction paper and have the kids cover it with their own holiday drawings and designs.
• When icicles start to form in low places where children can reach, show them how to take a little bit of food coloring and very carefully dribble it down the sides of the icicle. It will freeze and more layers of ice will form over it. Add a little color every day for a beautiful design.
• Older kids can make an edible garland out of ribbon and their favorite candy! Choose treats that have holes in them like Lifesavers or use a needle to poke through candies like DOTS, Hot Tamales and other gummies.
Kids’ creative juices are always flowing, so ask for some of their ideas. You’re sure to get a few great ones!
